What is Percentage Difference?

Percentage difference is a way to compare two values by expressing their difference as a percentage of their average. Unlike percentage change, which compares a change to an initial value, percentage difference treats both values equally.

This calculation is particularly useful when neither value can be considered a starting or reference point, or when you want to express how different two values are relative to their magnitude.

How to Calculate Percentage Difference

To calculate the percentage difference between two values:

Absolute Difference = |Value 1 - Value 2|

Average = (Value 1 + Value 2) ÷ 2

Percentage Difference = (Absolute Difference ÷ Average) × 100

For example, to find the percentage difference between 150 and 100:

  1. Calculate absolute difference: |150 - 100| = 50
  2. Calculate average: (150 + 100) ÷ 2 = 125
  3. Calculate percentage: (50 ÷ 125) × 100 = 40%
