Determine your face shape using facial measurements and proportions
To accurately determine your face shape, follow these measurement guidelines:
- Face Length: Measure from your hairline to the bottom of your chin, keeping the tape straight.
- Face Width: Measure across the widest part of your face, typically across your cheekbones.
- Jaw Width: Measure from one corner of your jaw to the other, across the widest point.
- Forehead Width: Measure across the widest part of your forehead, typically about halfway between your eyebrows and hairline.
- Cheekbone Width: Measure across your cheekbones, from the outer point of one cheekbone to the other.
For best results, use a soft measuring tape and take measurements while looking straight ahead in a mirror.
- Oval: Balanced proportions with a slightly curved jawline. Length is about 1.5 times the width, with cheekbones as the widest point.
- Round: Similar length and width measurements, with soft angles and full cheeks. No sharp angles at the jawline.
- Square: Similar length and width measurements, but with strong, angular features and a prominent jawline.
- Heart: Wider forehead and cheekbones that taper to a narrower, pointed chin. Often features a widow's peak.
- Diamond: Narrow forehead and jawline with prominent, wide cheekbones. Length is typically greater than width.
- Rectangle: Long face with similar measurements for forehead, cheeks, and jawline. Length is notably greater than width.
- Triangle: Wider jawline that gradually narrows towards the forehead. Cheekbones are typically narrower than the jaw.
- Oblong: Similar to rectangle but with more curved edges and prominent cheekbones. Length is significantly greater than width.
Your face shape can guide your choices in hairstyles, glasses, makeup, and accessories:
- Oval: Most styles work well. Try side-swept bangs and medium-length cuts.
- Round: Create length with layered cuts and avoid chin-length styles. Use angular frames for glasses.
- Square: Soften angles with side-swept styles and layers. Choose oval or round glasses frames.
- Heart: Balance width with chin-length bobs or long layers. Avoid heavy bangs.
- Diamond: Add width at forehead and jaw with side-swept bangs and chin-length styles.
- Rectangle: Create width with layers and waves. Avoid very long, straight styles.
Each face shape typically exhibits certain characteristics:
- Prominent Cheekbones: Common in diamond and oval shapes
- Strong Jaw: Characteristic of square and triangle shapes
- Soft Angles: Typical in round and oval shapes
- Wide Forehead: Common in heart shapes
- Balanced Proportions: Characteristic of oval shapes
- Angular Features: Common in diamond and square shapes
Can face shape change over time?
While your basic face shape remains constant, factors like weight changes, aging, and facial structure development can slightly modify your face shape over time.
Why is knowing your face shape important?
Understanding your face shape helps you choose the most flattering hairstyles, makeup techniques, glasses frames, and accessories. It can also guide contouring and highlighting techniques.
What if my face doesn't fit exactly into one category?
Many people have combination face shapes that share characteristics of multiple categories. Focus on the most prominent features when making styling choices.
