BAI Calculator
Calculate your Body Adiposity Index using height and hip circumference
The Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a method of estimating the percentage of body fat in humans. It uses:
- Hip Circumference
- Height
BAI is designed to be a simple and accessible alternative to BMI, as it does not require weight measurements.
For accurate BAI calculation, measure:
- Height: Stand straight against a wall, without shoes
- Hip Circumference: Measure around the widest part of your hips, ensuring the tape is horizontal
Take measurements in the morning, before eating, for most consistent results.
BAI results are interpreted as follows:
- Underfat: BAI < 21% (Women), BAI < 8% (Men)
- Healthy: 21-33% (Women), 8-20% (Men)
- Overfat: 33-39% (Women), 20-25% (Men)
- Obese: BAI > 39% (Women), BAI > 25% (Men)
These ranges are general guidelines; consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
How is BAI different from BMI?
BAI uses hip circumference and height, while BMI uses weight and height. BAI is designed to be a simpler measure that doesn't require weight measurements.
How accurate is BAI?
BAI is a reasonable estimate of body fat, but it is not as accurate as direct measures like DEXA scans. It provides a general indication of body fat levels.
Is BAI suitable for everyone?
BAI may not be accurate for individuals with unusual body proportions or specific medical conditions. It is best used as a general screening tool.
